New India will become a ‘Sports Manufacturing Hub’

Miscellaneous

In the Union Budget 2026-27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a dedicated initiative for high-quality sports goods manufacturing, research, and equipment design to establish India as a global hub. This strategy, alongside the “Khelo India Mission,” aims to modernize manufacturing, foster innovation, and support MSMEs in cities like Meerut and Jalandhar.
Key components of this initiative include:
Targeted Incentives: A 5-year scheme, likely starting April 1, 2026, is under consideration to offer capital investment support and production-linked incentives.
R&D and Innovation: Focus on upgrading material sciences and equipment design, complemented by a national institute for sports science and research.
Infrastructure Growth: Reviving 200 legacy industrial clusters through improved technology and infrastructure.
Export Expansion: The goal is to grow India’s share in the global market, with the industry currently valued at over $4.88 billion (₹42,877 crore) in 2024.
Employment & Skill: The sector aims to further boost jobs for over five lakh people already employed in the industry, enhancing local manufacturing capabilities.
This initiative aligns with the broader “Viksit Bharat 2047” vision, aiming to transform the nation into a self-reliant, high-quality manufacturer.
