A portion of the false ceiling of the Multipurpose Hall-cum-Wrestling Hall at the Netaji Subhash National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala, collapsed during the Independence Day celebrations on August 15. The incident occurred while a cultural programme was being conducted inside the hall. A video of the incident reportedly shows the false ceiling collapsing moments before a student was scheduled to perform on stage.
Although several elite athletes, including members of the boxing and weightlifting national camps, regularly train at the venue, the Independence Day function was attended primarily by diploma students and athletes from the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE) camps at the campus. Some students and players sustained minor injuries and were immediately attended to by the medical team available at NIS. A few individuals were subsequently taken for CT scans and other medical examinations, and their reports were stated to be normal.
According to Vineet Kumar, DDG/Senior Executive Director, NIS, incessant rainfall in Patiala may have resulted in water seepage through the roof, potentially weakening the false ceiling and causing the collapse. He stated that the NIS Director, Sumit Miglani, was coordinating the response and that necessary measures would be taken to prevent recurrence.

In view of the incident, NIS authorities have indicated that a structural audit of the facility will be undertaken, including an assessment of whether prescribed maintenance protocols have been followed. The incident highlights the need for a comprehensive review of the structural condition, roof-waterproofing systems, false ceilings and maintenance practices across the NIS campus to ensure the safety of athletes, students and staff.
