What BCCI officially says
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has denied reports that VVS Laxman is being considered to replace Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian team (particularly the Test team). Officials called these rumours baseless and factually incorrect.
BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and other board representatives have reiterated that no steps have been taken to change the coaching leadership or approach Laxman for the job.
Statements from multiple outlets clarify that Gambhir continues in his role and that speculation linking Laxman directly to the head coach post is false
Why the rumours surfaced
The speculation gained traction after India’s poor Test results in 2025, including a home series whitewash by South Africa under Gambhir’s coaching.
Some media reports suggested informal touches with Laxman given his experience, but the BCCI has clearly denied any official contact or negotiation.
Current situation
Gautam Gambhir remains head coach of the Indian men’s team.
VVS Laxman has not been appointed nor officially approached to replace him.
